Fine Wine: Happy Birthday, Trent Reznor!

The American version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was good, right? To be honest, I didn’t really pay a lot of attention to what was happening on the screen; I was way too distracted by the film’s score. And when the credits came on at the end, and Trent Reznor's named rolled by, a hushed Ohhhhhh came from my friends and me. Who else could produce such a tortured and dimensional sound? He won an Academy Award for this project, a Grammy for the score of The Social Network, and produced the soundtrack for another one of my favorite films, Natural Born Killers. Evidently, Trent Reznor (I say his name in full because it's awesome) has been super busy since the halcyon days of Nine Inch Nails—collaborating with artists like Marilyn Manson, Jane's Addiction, and Queens of the Stone Age. NIN started off, like most good things, as a nighttime project: Reznor would stay back late at the recording studio, where he was the janitor. Their album, Pretty Hate Machine, was released in 1989 and their eighth album is expected to come out this year. Bring it on! Today is Trent Reznor's birthday, so take a look at our tribute to him.

With so many fresh items popping up each day, OC's fashion editor, Alice, brings you her favorites in "THIS JUST IN."

Anything monogrammed, personalized, logoed—I'm on it. (Someone once asked if all my luggage was from a brand called "ANH.") So I'm fully on-board with Acne Studios' printed leather tote bags. "L.Nyg. 23" is the Stockholm address of the original Acne HQ, where the label is still based. It's stamped onto the bag's super soft nappa leather in juicy green all-caps. Nice. And speaking of cool Swedish things, this granite-print trench dress by Patrik Ervell (OK, he lives in New York but he's Swedish in name at least) makes a perfect match this week.

Sans bag, this outfit is on a one-way road to monochrome. But the dream team that is Tracy's hair color and the pink Acne tote, balance things out.

Onscreen Outfitting: Dana Lee for 'Crystal Fairy'

From Jimmy Dean's red windbreaker in Rebel Without a Cause to Gwyneth's tennis dress in The Royal Tenenbaums, clothes have obviously played a big part in movies. The relationship between film and fashion is even more complementary when a movie's tone pairs perfectly with a designer's aesthetic. The 2013 Sundance entry Crystal Fairy, a film by Sebastián Silva in which an uncouth Michael Cera and pals take a road trip in search of a mythical hallucinogen, called for a road- and mind-trip-ready wardrobe. And who better to capture this look than designer Dana Lee, who pinned down that laze n' daze spirit with French terry Henleys, faded chinos, and menswear that can go from dapper to rugged? Before the film's June 28th screening at New York's Rooftop Films, OC had a quick chat with Lee about how her uber-relaxed pieces meshed with the film's drug-driven wanderlust.

How did you become involved with Crystal Fairy?
Mark Grattan, who art-directed the film, is a good friend of mine. He also wears a lot of my clothes. I got a phone call from Mark one day asking if I'd like to participate in wardrobing the film, and of course said yes. I love Michael Cera and really identify with the naturalist feel and the intimate, everyday subject matter of Silva's films.

What about your menswear aesthetic made it a good fit for the movie?
The cast is young and much of the film takes place in the Chilean desert so the Dana Lee Spring/Summer 2013 items really fit that setting—particularly the pigment-dyed tanks, tees, pants, and shorts, which have a pre-worn and sun-faded, sort of slacker feel. My clothes tend to be somewhat ubiquitous and anti-sensational, so Mark was able to outfit almost the entire cast while keeping the film looking natural. It was important to him that the film have a really cohesive yet unforced feeling.

In designing clothes for the characters, what were your sources of inspiration?
The geographical setting and the characters' youthfulness played a big part in it.

Did you also pull pieces from your past collections?
We used pieces from several collections, mainly SS11.

What did you think of the movie?
I have actually only seen clips and stills, so I'm itching to see the film. At its Sundance debut, Crystal Fairy was awarded Best Director in World Cinema, so I know that it's going to be really good.

Celestial Power: An Interview with Henry Flynt

Since the late 1950s artist Henry Flynt has been challenging traditional models of music and art. Though lesser-known than other avant-garde artists of his time, Flynt is credited with coining the term "concept art." While never defining himself as a Fluxus artist, Henry is a close friend of La Monte Young, who invited him to perform at Yoko Ono’s New York loft in 1961—for the likes of modern composers John Cage and Richard Maxfield.

I recently became interested in Henry’s work after listening to a re-release of his first record, Graduation, and watching a video interview on Artforum. What is most interesting about Henry’s music is its ability to blend avant-garde styles of composition with the traditions of "lowbrow" Southern music, which renders each song accessible yet complex. I had the pleasure of interviewing Henry at the Emily Harvey Foundation in New York.

Courtney Yoshimura: Can you tell me how you started your career and moved to New York?
Henry Flynt: I got into modern music as a teenager, while I was at Harvard in the late 50s. I never took a music course but I got involved with Tony Conrad—who was also a mathematics major—and Christian Wolff.

It was a so-called "new music" scene, which basically had nothing to do with the music department. Serious modern music was treated, at that time, like a scientific field. At any rate, Tony Conrad went to California and met La Monte Young, which was absolutely crucial. La Monte and I were placed in correspondence because I had one of my compositions featured at a new music concert at Harvard. It was very post-Cage, which was scandalous at the time and got La Monte’s attention.

La Monte moved to New York in the fall of 1960 and he almost immediately began to curate concerts in Yoko Ono’s loft. He invited me down to New York to attend the first one with Terry Jennings. However, by that time I had already become disillusioned with serious modern music and had begun to listen to jazz. That evening, I decided, to hell with this modern music I’m going to play jazz piano and I started to play, but the room was so square that I couldn’t get anything going. I abandoned it in disgust and spent the rest of the evening in a completely impromptu performance. I had brought some props with me and I basically just made all of it up. I guess it was successful, at least with some people. I wanted to be considered very advanced and I guess I was by the people that I wanted to be respected by [laughs]. I mean, Cage was sitting in the front row and at one point I fanned a deck of cards and asked him to pick one and he ended up picking the Joker.

After it was all over I said to Cage, I’m through with this, the musicians I respect are Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley and Cage said, Who are they? The young woman standing next to us explained who they were and he said, Well, if that’s what you like then what are you doing here? That was our first confrontation.

The other thing that Cage said was, How can you accept the division of time into equal lengths? Which is what conventional music does. Cage’s question really resonated with me. In some of my published recordings I’ve chosen to move outside of the fixed beat. I make people believe they’re listening to something in the realm of popular music but structurally it’s not at all and I hope that that deepens it.

And I understand that you were also making visual art at this time?
I wanted to try everything, so I tried my hand at visual art from around 1959 to 1961. Then, in June 1961, I used the term concept art. Now that the dust has set

Extreme Workout! Introducing Astrid Andersen

Lace and basketball are an unusual pairing. Unless you're Dennis Rodman or Astrid Andersen. This season, the Danish designer takes it there with delicate lace jerseys, fur-trimmed tank tops, and organza jogging pants. "Astrid pulls off a real sexiness with her sportswear," says Fashion East director LULU KENNEDY. The young designer has showed with Fashion East at London Fashion Week for the past three seasons now. And this season, as she prepares for her first on-schedule solo show in June, her Spring/Summer 2013 collection is also on the racks at OC for the first time—making her a real fashion double threat. We're super excited to be stocking Astrid's pieces and even more excited to see what comes next. I called her up to check in.

Alice Newell-Hanson: Hi Astrid. So you’re in Denmark right now? Where do you spend most time, there or London?
Astrid Andersen: Yeah, I’m in Copenhagen right now. It’s very much back and forth these days, because we have the show next month.

Which city do you think you're more influenced by?
London, definitely. In Copenhagen, I like to be able to step back from everything. It’s a bit of an escape really.

Sportswear is so strong in London—is it as visible in Copenhagen?
No, not at all. The Scandinavian point of view is always very precise and fixated on what is good taste and what is bad taste. I think in London there’s room for people—I wouldn’t say to have bad taste—but to reference bad taste without it being frowned upon. I really love that about London.

As well as sportswear, there's a religious layer to the Spring/Summer 2013 collection, with the stained-glass-window graphics, for example.
The whole concept for Spring/Summer 2013 was how the gym is replacing the church, but cross-referenced with basketball. The community that you used to find at church, those boys are now finding the same kind of community at the gym. In London, and in Copenhagen too actually, you see these guys hanging out in groups and you know they all work out with the same program because they're all toned in the same way.

And what is it about basketball that speaks to you?
I find my way back to that aesthetic because, for me, it’s just the most attractive. The season before this I was really into a basketball player called Vlade Divac, from former Yugoslavia. He was one of the first players to come to the NBA from Europe. There are lots of stories within the basketball universe that fascinate me. But I think overall it’s how [the players] walk, and talk to each other, in a specific way. It’s a very masculine reference that I always like to throw into my work.

The fabrics you used for Spring/Summer 2013 are a strong contrast to that.
I love the mixture of sportswear references with lace and chiffon to give [the pieces] a different dimension. I reference a guy who’s super tough on the outside, who goes to the gym and is super buff, but then I like to expose the sensitive side as well—because he’s insecure about fitting into the world and he’s dependent on the guys he goes to the gym with.

What can we expect for Spring/Summer 2014?
I went to Florence recently and saw this amazing collection of stones. That was really powerful. And so were the stories about how they collect them in the mines. Florence w

Here's what I came up with: shooting stars streaming over a tangerine sunset that silhouettes some divine heroine on a unicorn. Tsumori's aesthetic is not only super unique but it has remained unchanged since its creation in 1990. Her following is loyal and ever-expanding, while her designs and hand-drawn prints continue to excite. This admiration coupled with my interest in her time spent working with Issey Miyake during the 70s meant that I had to interview Tsumori while she was in New York. James and I met her on the Bowery and she was just as quixotic as I had hoped.

Gillian Tozer: You began working with Issey Miyake shortly after you finished college. I imagine this experience was an eye-opener.
Tsumori Chisato: After I graduated, there was a national fashion design contest and among the jurors was Issey Miyake. He really liked my work and decided to take me on in his team. I started working for the label and then was put in charge of Issey Sports.

Can you describe Japanese fashion scene during the late 70s and early 80s?
It was very free. There were no money issues and no budget. It was open and accepting—you could do a lot of things.

What were some of the most valuable lessons you learned while designing with Miyake?
He taught me the dynamics of design and creativity and the importance of teamwork.

When you decided to create your label, how did you envision the brand growing? Did you have a five-year plan?
I was supported by Issey Miyake so even for my brand there was no limit. I didn’t have a real plan, I was just doing whatever I wanted to; I felt like what I was doing was right and that’s it. Nothing was planned, really!

What were some of the greatest mistakes you made as a young designer?
I used to make clothes that I liked. I soon learned that these pieces weren't necessarily selling. I had to find a balance between my creativity and the commercial side of things.

And yet you have remained true to your aesthetic all this time. How do you respond to the ever-changing market and trends?
I don’t really know what the trends are. I just go with the flow and do what I like. I keep the trends in mind because they are everywhere, on the streets and in museums, but I’m not working for them.

What are some of the changes you’ve made in your approach to your design process? Have you adapted with technology or do you prefer traditional methods of design?
I love things that are hand-printed. I prefer the work of human beings, not machines. I make all of the drawings by myself. I work all day, every day, drawing in my sketchbook—I can’t stop!

What is the future of fashion?
I always say originality is the key in design. It’s not about copying other designers. Going back to basics and keeping things original is what’s important.

You originally wanted to be a Manga illustrator. At what point did you decide to turn to fashion design?
It takes a long time to create Manga. It’s not just drawing—it’s writing a story, too! I’m not saying that being a fashion designer is easy, but Manga was too hard!

Tell me about your trip to Arizona, the inspiration for your Spring/Summer 2013 collection?
There were so many rocks! There aren’t any rocks in Paris or Tokyo. All of the colors in the collection are very specific to Ari

Loafer 2.0: Introducing Adieu

People genuinely used to keep pennies in their penny loafers. Prep school kids in the 50s would stash change under the strap for making pay phone calls. Since then, the loafer has gone through many incarnations, on the feet of JFK (brown), Don Johnson in Miami Vice (white), and Michael Jackson (black, white socks). For Spring/Summer 2013, Paris label Adieu presents its own take on the loafer, inspired by the designers' love for thick-soled Teddy Boy styles. Founded in 2012, the line brings together the talents of industry insiders Benjamin Caron and Isabelle Guédon, who have clocked time at a long list of Paris houses that includes (Yves) Saint Laurent. This is their second collection and styles include zip-front boots and brogues for boys, and lace-up loafers and suede oxfords for girls—all with chunky crepe soles.

SO REAL: Rodney Graham at 303 Gallery

A few years ago when John Baldessari was asked who he thinks is the most influential artist, he answered, "Rodney Graham." In his seventh show with 303 Gallery, the maestro returns with a series of stunning (we repeat––stunning!) lightbox photographs. The pieces depict hyperreal panoramas of everyday nature, street, and interior scenes, and they come through with such clarity and vibrance that you'd think they're windows into a crisply detailed reality. See them at the gallery's brand spankin' new home at 507 West 24th Street before the show closes on June 15th, 2013. You won't regret it!
