Established: 1938
Herbert Schier's "Veldskoen" boots are made in a small village on the Namibian coast. Colloquially known as "vellies," the shoes are worn by just about everyone in Namibia, from university students to bushrangers—providing the inspiration for the modern-day desert boot. At the Schier workshop, a team of eight local gentlemen hand-stitches each boot from two pieces of wild kudu hide. Turning out just 20 pairs in an afternoon, the shoemakers get creative with textural patchworks and bright savannah colors.
