A typical art opening in New York often entails white walls, wine in plastic cups, and tedious chit chat, but last night the video artist Borna Sammak twisted the familiar formula by holding his first solo show at the Best Buy on Broadway above Houston St.. Acknowledge the cognitive dissonance of that last sentence, and then think about it for a minute. It makes sense. After all, Borna created his videos with the modern high definition television in mind and where to find the most tricked-out flat screens in one space than your local budget electronics emporium? The installation, organized by curator Thomas McDonnell, featured over 40 screens all showing different versions of scrambled, deconstructed movie trailers, internet footage, and videos from a pocket camera. Vivid lights and abstract shapes recalled an iTunes visualizer on a peyote trip.
