Photography and Perspiration: Jack Pierson at Bortolami
To celebrate the opening of Jack Pierson's latest show, Bortolami Gallery threw a sweat-soaked summer party at the garage space under the High Line. The show deserved its heavy hype: Pierson's large-scale photos printed on creased photo paper question the manner in which we view photography. Awe-inspiring images of landscapes, sculpture, and incandescent forms are displayed without frames, emphasizing the idea that the imagery is portable and ephemeral. The show, 'Go There Now and Take This With You,' echoes the traveling and mental image collecting we all do come summertime.

The mental image I collected at the adjacent party was one of tacos and unattractively sweaty humans. Endless Summer Tacos (a truck usually parked at Bedford and North 3rd) served up tortilla treats to revelers gripping hard-won bottles of beer. DJ Spencer Sweeney and Alexcalibur provided tunes, but much of the crowd was concentrating on how to get out of the jam-packed, infernally hot space. One dude even resorted to scaling the wall of the space to climb out!
