Forget Mickey Mouse. When I was a wee boy, I thought Babar the Elephant was the bigger star. Babar’s story is totally worthy of a biopic: He loses his mother, moves to the big city, then rocks a green three-piece suit like no other four-legged creature. Mickey—he couldn’t even put a shirt on most of the time.
This year, the French elephant king celebrates his 80th anniversary! And what better way to honor the style-packing pachyderm than with a capsule collection. Using vintage illustrations by creator Jean de Brunhoff, Danish menswear label Soulland brings Babar to a bunch of summer-ready button-downs, T-shirts, shorts, and a sweatshirt. On them you will find Babar at the tailor, cruising in a roadster, and in various states of boss-dom.
When I was an overseas missionary kid on Mindanao, I got a hand-sewn shirt to wear at Easter with similar embroidered details which the Celeste Paris immediately brings to mind. To me, somehow tropical (and Filipino to me) and I loved it. Nice blog: "style-packing pachyderm" is a nice flourish. Keep blogging!
