In a family portrait, taken when she was 19, Frida Kahlo appears dressed as a man. She was badass. Frida is an inspiration because she didn't care what people thought, or at least she didn't let on that she did. At college, she hung out with the communist kids, she had an affair with Josephine Baker, married Diego Rivera (twice), befriended Trotsky, and created heart-breaking, magical paintings when her whole body was encased in plaster. And all the while, she looked phenomenal. Tomorrow is Frida's birthday. Here's our tribute to her inimitable wardrobe, filled with technicolor Tehuana costumes, flowers, rings, ribbons, and earrings shaped like hands.
