After a painting by Dürer
Currently up at Gavin Brown's Enterprise is Group Shoe, an eclectic show curated by the painter Joe Bradley. The story here seems to be a study of human culture, with imagery that could very well say a lot about us if, say, it were squeezed into a time capsule for aliens to find in 3,000 years. There are allusions to man's political behavior (with a hysterical, incisive phallic parade by Bread and Puppet Theater), human figures with gaping orifices (some more scatological than others––thanks, Carroll Dunham), a nod to feel-good, old-school pop culture (courtesy of Keith Mayerson's homage to Peanuts), and an insanely real-looking human sculpture by Duane Hanson (to which I actually excused myself when I almost backed into it). Peep the snaps and be sure to check out the work before it closes!
