The Tearing, Bathers XII, and Monster Bather X
The frantic title of Ella Kruglyanskaya's first solo show at Gavin Brown's, Woman! Painting! Woman!, is a good indication of what to expect from the artist's depictions of females. Her women are round, sinuous, and full-bodied, but these are no coy mistresses. Painted with the strokes of a vivacious hand, they are angry, confrontational, menacing––as if Kruglyanskaya were showing the histrionic underside of women that she's all too familiar with as one herself. Whether done intentionally or not, the tight crop of the scenes makes the works feel like vignettes of a comic book. How the story of each piece ends is unclear, though one thing is certain: the women demand to be looked at.
Through July 30th.
