FUN: Rose and I playing with the installation
As most of you know, the newest Reyn Spooner for Opening Ceremony collection has hit OC stores, making waves with its punch-packing prints and its sporty Waikiki vibe. But to really bring Hawaii to OC, we enlisted the very awesome videographer/artist Rose Schlossberg to create an in-store installation at the New York store.
With a little bit of magic (read: a laptop, a projector, a CIA-status eye-detecting camera, and some commendable tech work by Patrick Hebron) Rose has designed an interactive experience that invites visitors to look into the camera and find their faces replaced by bobbing beach-themed graphics she hand-drew herself. I hung around during the set-up to watch it all come together. Peep my Q&A with Rose and the pics of the installation, and drop by OCNY now through July 7th to check it out. (West coast––look out for the installation at OCLA soon!)
Sofia Cavallo: How did the idea/concept for the piece come about? Rose Schlossberg: The impulse was really to apply some of the fun stuff you can do with computer vision to a retail environment. Namely, the computer can tell when there's a face in front of the camera, and then on the image projected on the wall, we can draw a pineapple over your face. It's the American Dream.
SC: Tell me about the execution.
RS: I had a lot of help on this project from friends at my grad program (Tisch's Interactive Telecommunications Program). My friend Patrick Hebron wrote most of the software and Gabriella Levine and Ivana Basic helped me with the technical and aesthetic aspects of the physical installation.
SC: If your name were an acronym (R.O.S.E.), what would it stand for?
RS: Roser Osero Seros Erose
SC: What's your beach read at the moment? RS: 0 0 0 1 0 0 1 1 0 1 0 0 1 01
SC: You're a pretty frequent OC visitor. Any favorite brands? RS: I like a lot of the OC collaborations. They always make interesting choices and often the modifications are subtle but really perfect.
SC: Any favorite Reyn Spooner for OC pieces? RS: I like the Reversed Print Cigarette Pants. OC has cornered the loud pants market.
