In 1997, my friend got a birthday cake iced with Leonardo DiCaprio's face. Earlier that year, he'd sketched Kate Winslet in nothing but a heart-shaped necklace, which then sunk to the bottom of the ocean and stayed there, until Britney's astronaut boyfriend went down and got if for her. Is it just me or does Jordan Askill's amethyst necklace look like the Heart of the Ocean—the epicenter of our childhood obsessions?
Jordan hand-carved the pendant from a single amethyst to show one of his most beloved motifs, a swallow, flying out from its purple center. The natural world has always animated Jordan's work, providing his subjects—horses, waves, and, panthers—and dictating his methods of production. Each of the tiny citrine and amethyst stones that stars in his spring collection, and in his ever-popular BIRTHSTONE RINGS, has been mined in an ethically and ecologically conscious way.
Born in Australia, Jordan worked at Hedi Slimane's Dior before moving to London. We stopped by his East End studio earlier this week to see him at work. Watch this space for photos!
