With art fairs, gallery shows, and museum exhibits opening left and right, the past week has certainly had the NYC art world on its toes. Another show that's been on our radar is Francesco Clemente's Nostalgia/Utopia at Mary Boone Gallery in Chelsea. The works (the legendary artist's newest) have a pious quality to them and deftly combine iconography lifted from disparate cultures––from Afro-Brazilian to Indian and Colonial Baroque. Each painting is three-dimensional, and incorporates objects like buttons, transistor radios, pearl strands, and pitchers. The show's bonus feature? The 18 drawings in the back gallery, which give insight into the artist's thinking process before he delved into creating his paintings.
Through June 30, 2012.
