Looking at Henry Holland's studio, you just want to hang out with him. OC's friend in London Harry Carr dropped by the space to check out the scene in the aftermath of House of Holland's Fall/Winter 2012 show. Decorated with racks of the collection's bright metallic houndstooth (incoming at OC!), Polaroids of his friends, and even a puppy, Henry's studio is the brick-and-mortar equivalent of his cheeky British clothes.
Alice Newell-Hanson: Hi Henry! Can you tell me a bit about your studio. Where is it exactly, and what's the atmosphere like right now?
Henry Holland: Our studio is in Shoreditch in East London. It's the top floor of an old warehouse with a really high barn roof and beams. It is always a total mess but the atmosphere right now is quite calm as we have just completed our FW12 show.
ANH: What's the soundtrack at the moment?
HH: Smooth Radio—everyone likes to sing along (tunelessley)
ANH: Lunch food of choice?
HH: Chicken salad or vegetable soup
ANH: When everything's going nuts, what do you do to let off steam?
HH: Laugh. If things are crazy, the best thing to do is to keep laughing. Keep it fun, then even the toughest times are enjoyable!
ANH: We can see a lot of pieces from the Fall/Winter 2012 collection around. How would you sum up the look?
HH: Batty old grandma and all the things she loves to do
ANH: Thinking about the current spring collection, can you tell me about the H of H tartan?
HH: The House of Holland tartan was first developed for our Fall/Winter 2008 collection, in deep purple, but we reworked it for the Spring/Summer 2012 show. It is registered as our house tartan and identifies members of the "clan"!
ANH: What were your main references for the collection?
HH: Gavin Watson imagery of skins and punks from the late 70s, and Miami
ANH: If House of Holland really was a house, what would it look like, and who would live in it?
HH: I think it would be a mish-mash of colors, loud music, and lots of guests—a bit of a party house!
ANH: Where's your favorite place to go dancing in London?
HH: Eastern Bloc
ANH: And your favorite place to go after?
ANH: If you could have a lifetime supply of anything, what would it be?
HH: Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray. I go through a bottle a fortnight. It's the only thing that keeps the quiff in place.
