Alex, the artist, looking pretty as a picture. Bill (right)
Alex Prager at Yancey Richardson Gallery
Who doesn't love a damsel in distress? Starlet of the evening news, she's ours only for a moment, so you'd better not look away. But better than a four-car pileup or a burning building, Alex Prager's new exhibit Compulsion gives the art world something to rubberneck over. Now open at the Yancey Richardson Gallery, the show is a stunning collection of images that expose our worst fears and our darkest fascinations. They are the moments of crisis and disaster that satiate the craving for destruction, theat display the pleasure in losing yourself to oblivion.

Served with a touch of glam and sex appeal, these dark rumblings of the human psyche take shape in the exhibit's vibrant prints and Prager's accompanying short film, La Petite Mort. Featuring work by Black Swan's Matthew Libatique and starring the gorgeous Judithe Godrèche, La Petite Mort follows one woman's ecstatic experience of her own death and what awaits her beyond herself. The whole exhibit is terribly ambitious, but Prager delivers exceptional, stylish work that's as dramatic as it is beautiful. Try as you might, you won't look away.
