As you know, we kinda love Parker Posey. Today being the party girl's birthday, you can see why this Roctakon mixtape couldn't be more appropriate. Happy birthday, Parker!
When I asked OC friend and veteran NYC club DJ, Roctakon, to do a mix for us, I figured it would sound something like his Friday nights at The Westway, where you’re guaranteed to hear Taylor Swift and Fleetwood Mac mixed perfectly with Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, and even that “Kiss Me” song from She’s All That.
Seriously, nobody throws down the hits and makes it-boy/girls with iPods insecure like Roc. So when I got his e-mail that he’d done a concept mix with no hip-hop or “We Found Love”, I was pretty shocked. But we trust him, and he delivered something completely unexpected, surprisingly romantic, and almost magical. I’ll let him explain:
When I was a kid, Party Girl was one of my favorite movies. If you were 16 in 1995, an aspiring DJ, and not-so-closet total dork, Mary would have been everything to you too. I picked songs I know she would have danced to, songs that I really did dance to, and songs that for me define that era. This mix is a tribute to her and to my late teens, where I spent a lot more time as patron than DJ, a lot more time dancing to house music, and a lot more time romanticizing Parker Posey.
You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll spontaneously break out in vogue. Part history lesson, part love letter, and all dance party, Roctakon’s mix is nostalgia without irony, and we cannot get enough.
I actually cried during this mixtape. It's so good and brings back memories at a point in my life when I really wasn't sure about my sexuality. Actually, I'm still not sure.....Anyhow, Roctaguetta BRAVO!!!!
