The great thing about Alexander Wang show is that you know what you’re getting yourself into: sporty outerwear, killer heels, and a grunge appeal, among other signatures, but you never really have any clues as to what the theme of the collection could possibly be. The show invite always looks the same, you know it’s going to be held at Pier 94, and you understand the now classic “Wang Girl.” But his oeuvre, perhaps due to his comparative newness as a designer, has not been static.
Once he was pigeonholed for dishing out too much black season after season, he made a sharp left turn and from then on, unpredictability set in. It’s a good thing it did, because his self-awareness led him to create a myriad Wang “Gangs” (his word, not mine) for Spring 2012. Some donned saturated monochrome floral full looks, others motocross/BMX inspired mesh bodysuits with their hair slicked back under leather perforated “mesh” kerchiefs, and others grommeted vinyl outerwear. Wang’s version of The Warriors was the coolest of the season so far. Check out the final walk through the amazing mirrored set, and some of the looks from the show.
