The event itself needs no introduction, but for those caught unawares I will give one anyway. Last night, Opening Ceremony took over the Ace Hotel lobby and closed off Broadway, between 28th and 29th Streets, to host our Mercado de Carnaval – all in the name of Fashion’s Night Out. With carnival games galore, fabulous food, drinks and friends, FNO never looked so magnificent!
Sultry tango performances, right there on Broadway, kicked off the evening's entertainment. Moments later, Hanna Herbertson led her flash mob dance crew through what would be one of five dancehall routines, each with Suno, OC, Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang T and Christopher Kane costume changes! Inside the Ace Hotel lobby, the fun was bouncing off the walls as Vogue food editor Jeffrey Steingarten discussed Argentinean Malbec and Laura Catena’s book, Vino Argentino. Ascending the lobby’s staircase, the ethereal Manila Luzon (in character as Evita) captivated her audience singing “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” and “Rainbow High”.
But there was, of course, a bigger diva in the house, the unparalleled Miss Piggy. Interviewed by Carol and Humberto, Miss Piggy flirted with the crowd (and her man slave who fanned her all night with a big feather), and obliged OC friends Spike Jonze, Esperanza Spalding, Jack MCcollough and Lazaro Hernandez, Delfina Delettrez, Humberto’s mom and designers Spirit Hoods, to take a photo with her!
Carnival games are fun, no arguments there. But those hosted by some of fashion's best designers, now that’s more like it! Stalls indoors and outdoors included the Alexander Wang skee ball stand, an aura reader at the Delfina Delettrez stall, The Muppets x Opening Ceremony and Riviera Club water pistol challenges, a Keds baseball pitch, Rodarte cotton candy, a Gitman Bros. darts game, customizable goodies at the Havaianas, Jansport, and Band of Outsiders stands.
At the OC booth, there were Aurelie Bidermann, Giles and Bros., Olympia Le Tan, A for Apple, Suno, Venessa Arizaga, WANT Les Essentiels De La Vie, Tsumori Chisato, Jennifer Behr, Happy Socks and Pamela Love goodies on offer – not to mention the HUGE, suede PS1 bag raffle (only $5 to play!). House restaurant, The Breslin, alongwith the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, La Newyorkina and Belvedere (spiked "sno-kones" - brainfreeze!) kept everyone full, yet coming back for more! To celebrate the launch of our Tumblr, we had a live-streaming photo booth just outside the OC store, while out on the street, OCTV had a van set up to record the usual FNO antics.
As the lights faded, we knew the after party was about to begin: set in Liberty Hall, DJs Blood Orange, Uproot Andy and DJ Esentrik made sure every surface in the hall was the dance floor! Phew!
All in all, it truly was a Fashion’s Night Out to remember. Gracias por los recuerdos!
