Goodbye, Laura! The intern gang outside of OC.
Outside Bluebird Sky on Baxter Street, on the edge of Chinatown.
Before our beloved blog intern Laura flew home to France, we decided a delicious last lunch was in order. I chose Bluebird Sky Cafe, a quaint, lesser-known coffee shop that serves simple, straightforward food for breakfast and lunch. The café is on Baxter Street, nestled between Hester and Canal Streets – merely a hop, skip, and a jump from OC's front steps.
Being hard-working interns, some of us were craving something a little less healthy, and a little more delicious. Pardis, Laura, Matt, and I ordered the grilled cheese, which sounded too perfect to pass on. With fontina, bacon, cheddar, and sliced tomatoes on sourdough bread, the melted masterpieces were both filling and satisfyingly greasy (perfect for the misty, cool day). Christa wisely chose a healthy avocado, mozzarella, tomato sandwich with dijon vinaigrette on ciabatta bread. Dusty opted for the peanut butter, honey, and banana sandwich. With assorted glass-bottled sodas and good coffee, we got our lunchtime caffeine fix on top of our tasty, fresh, and classic sandwiches.
Overall, the food was great (and clearly photogenic). Right off of bustling Canal Street, the café provides a calm atmosphere and food prepared with care. Bluebird is perfect for days when you and a friend can take some time out to sit and chat. With great prices for great food, I'll be back soon.
