All winter, nothing but beaches, barbecues, Slurpees, and Warriors of Radness were on my mind. Now that summer's finally here, all I want to do is sit outside and bake in the sun while listening to music, and I can't think of a more perfect band for that than TV Girl. TV Girl is Trung Ngo and Brad Petering, a duo from my hometown of San Diego, and the perfect soundtrack for the season's sweltering weather. Their upbeat and dreamy lo-fi sound perfectly captures my nostalgia for home, and I'm hooked! I caught up with my SD homies to chat about music, summer, and Shaggy.
Rachel Liu: Is "TV Girl" a person?
TV Girl: She’s this girl who wore Abercrombie & Fitch. But she’s been gone since that summer, since that summer…
RL: How did you guys know each other before did this project come about?
TVG: We’ve never known each other, not in the biblical sense.
RL: What is your musical background?
TVG: Last year Brad starred in a middle school production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
RL: Being from and living in southern California has obviously influenced your music. What else has affected your musical style?
TVG: It’s a tricky combination of whip-its and spite.
RL: You and fellow San Diego band Dirty Gold put your own spins on each other's songs. If you could have anyone cover a TV Girl song, who would it be?
TVG: Mariah Carey doing “I Don’t Care.”
RL: And who would you like to cover?
TVG: We’d like to cover Mariah Carey. And then maybe do one of her songs afterwards.
RL: TV Girl's EP was released last October and you've gotten a lot of feedback since. What's the best comment you've ever gotten on your music?
TVG: A hilariously mistranslated comment: “Their recently released EP with the same title, which has 4 pearls no intention Pop. Good growth, a very simple and easy, these 4 songs that add up to 10 minutes, they intend to make your day 'Simple is not?'.
RL: Favorite celebrity shout out? Who would you like to shout out?
TVG: Donald Glover posted something on his blog. Shout out to @weirdfiction.
RL: What do you think would be a good visual to pair with your music?
TVG: Shout out to Shaggy!
RL: West Coast = Best Coast?
TVG: Ivory Coast = Smiley Coast?
RL: What's next for TV Girl?
TVG: We have some new songs coming out in the next few months, to be released through various mediums. Follow us on Facebook and we’ll let you know when it’s ready.
