Longtime blog readers know much OC loves CONFETTISYSTEM -- and especially Nick Andersen and Julie Ho, the duo behind the pretty party supplies. So we were especially psyched when we heard about their new installation in collaboration with W/ ---- Project Space and United Bamboo, 'LIGHTS UP!," which opened yesterday.
CONFETTISYSTEM is known for its piñatas, garlands and branches (all pictured below). For this exhibition, Nick and Julie created an interactive theatre storeroom -- complete with stage lights, tasseld curtains, and costume pieces (one of which they let me try on!). The tiny 6 x 11 space is drenched in fluttering paper tassels, metallic shapes and hand-cut pieces. A mirrored wall not only enhances the soft lighting but also lends the room the 70s Chinatown feel they were going for.
A film by Jon Leone (who has directed videos for Ariel Pink, Animal Collective and Beach House) is projected against the back wall. Band Bubbles is slotted to play on June 1st. Nail art fanatics mark your calendars -- artist Abby Walton will transform the eye-catching space into a Chinatown nail salon on May 26th, before ARP performs a set.
LIGHTS UP! runs through June 2nd. More details here.
