Kaiju Big Battel is a pro-wrestling parody where monsters take to the ring and battle it out for the championship title. Participants' costumes are inspired by Japanese Tokusatsu entertainment, which is known for its over-the-top superheroes (Hell Monkey, Steam Powered Tentacle Boulder, Dr. Cube...) and special effects. In the ring are buildings of the NYC skyline, constructed out of cardboard and destroyed à la Godzilla, as the battle rages throughout the night. This year’s championship match was between reigning champion, Kung Fu Chicken Noodle, and his opponent, American Beetle, who in the end stole the title in a high-powered, city-crushing match. The event took place in Times Square’s B.B. King Blues Club and drew a diverse crowd of young children, tourists, cult followers, and newbies to this spectacular sight. Check out these snaps!
