Opening Ceremony friends and collaborators Kate and Laura Mulleavy graced New York with yet another emotional and thought-provoking collection today. With a visual procession that flew from beige prairie-length skirts to deep scarlet sparkles, the audience was taken on a unique journey. Textures took center stage: patchwork quilting worked into apron tops, thick artisanal lace skirts overlapping tulle petticoats, photo-printed chiffon evening dresses. Hair was Dust-Bowl sideswept by the incomparable Odile Gilbert, pinned at times with a golden fan. The superwhite neon rod bundles at the edge of the stage looked a bit like futuristic tumbleweeds or bales of hay: an apt echo of the reimagined Americana of the collection.
