As the premier Creative Director after Alfred Dunhill himself, Kim Jones is putting his mark on the legendary British brand. Humberto went tête-à-tête with the designer to catch up and hear about the line.
Humberto Leon: What classic KJ elements are brought to the Dunhill line?
Well I haven’t really changed my design aesthetic, I’ve just focused on the more formal side of menswear which is where I was heading anyway. But all my small details are still there!
HL: The accessories for this line are sick, has it been cool doing luxury accessories?
Yes I love that part. For me it’s probably the most exciting area - using new fabrications and techniques on something I haven’t done a huge amount on in the past!
HL: What do you think every man should have in his closet?
Well, some nice shirts, cashmere sweaters, good outerwear, a blazer, and anything he feels comfortable in.
HL: What do you like to collect?
I collect a lot of things but not specifics. Books, clothing, art, music, and bits from all of my travels. My house is quite eclectic to say the least! My favorite pieces are a Leigh Bowery jacket, a 500 year old Buddha statue, and a pair of Balenciaga lego shoes, all the bits of artwork I have, and all of my books!
HL: What was your favorite "clubbing" outfit from the past?
I think probably the funniest was the early nineties very large shirts with small knitted waistcoats. It was just plain horrible and everyone was doing sort of floaty dancing from side to side!
HL: Have you ever worn stacked shoes?
Yes on a few occasions. They were junior Gaultier and went with the above criminal outfit… alas I have no photos or I’d send you one!
HL: Is there any music that you are currently listening to?
Right now I’m listening to the RAH Band – “Clouds Across the Moon” and The Cure –“Lullaby” 12 Inch Mix.
HL: When's the last time you visited New York? Do you have a favorite NY restaurant?
I haven’t been to NYC for 6 months, I think. I always go to Café Habana and have the Cuban pork and corn with cheese and chili.
HL: Are you going anywhere fun soon?
I have a pretty packed schedule. I have Denmark this week then in the next few months I have Tokyo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Berlin, New York, San Francisco, and Hawaii.
HL: If you could name anyone, who would you want to sit next to you on a plane?
Oh well I don’t really mind – I get on a plane and fall instantly asleep. I have trained myself to do so from the minute I sit down.
HL: Is there anyone whose style is really doing it for you lately?
I did see someone very good but they were just walking down the street and I have no idea who they were!
HL: What are your favorite places in London to go thrifting?
Around Brick Lane is probably best, and Rellick obviously but that’s not thrift!
HL: What are your favorite things to do when you visit New York?
Walk through Greenwich Village, sit on the Christopher Street Pier, and go book shopping.
HL: What do you never leave home without?
My Ipod! I can’t go anywhere without music!
HL: It's pretty cool to be a part of Dunhill's history, will the Kim Jones line come back anytime soon?
Well I never say never and it’s good being the first creative director to Alfred himself. It’s a really great brand and it deserves for everyone to know it!
