Today is her birthday ... they're smoking cigars ... he's got a chain of flowers and sows a bird ... in her knickers. -- Sugarcubes, Birthday (1987)
There is no musician alive in the world today who is more brilliant, poignant, and diverse than Björk. At least, not to me (who has been a fan since her performance on SNL in 1988 with the Icelandic alterna-punk band The Sugarcubes), or perhaps to Bono, who once said that the "unforgettable power" of her voice could cut through walls, or Thom Yorke, who revealed that his favorite tune ever is one of Björk's. Since splitting from The Sugarcubes in 1992, this singer-songwriter has worked with some of today's best talent in the entertainment industry, including RZA, Madonna, Antony Hegarty, Spike Jonze, and Lars von Trier. Throughout her six full-length albums, from the electro-pop dance music of Debut to her most recent venture Volta, Björk has explored jazz, trip hop, electronica, rock, and classical music with an ease that only a handful of artists could dare boast -- all the while creating a visceral sound that is undoubtedly her own.
Like her music, Björk has a fashion sense that is charmingly unique, and as a tribute to her 45th birthday this past not-so-Gloomy Sunday, we present photos of Björk in all her glory with, of course, an OC gift guide!
