OC ♥ NY Art Book Fair is a month-long series of posts focused on the exhibitors of the New York Art Book Fair, presented by Printed Matter, Inc., Nov. 5-7th at MoMA PS1, and sponsored in part by Opening Ceremony. Nicholas Gottlund discusses the craftsmanship that makes his publishing house distinctive.
It's a crisp Fall afternoon here in the woods of rural Pennsylvania, and tucked away between the hills at the Gottlund Verlag studio, we're busy binding books.
We produce limited-edition books by contemporary artists with a focus on photography. Working closely with each artist, we design, print, and bind every edition here in the studio and almost totally by hand. So while the projects are often experimental and adventurous, the process behind making them is rooted in traditional craft. It's that balance that we try to keep at the heart of our publishing program.
We're really excited about the next group of books being released this Fall! Above Below is a book of huge Japanese wilderness images by photographer Kasane Nogawa. Our second project with Andrew Laumann is a grimy new zine called Black Book. We're also happy to be working with fellow P.A. native Ed Panar on his incredible series Same Difference.
Keep an eye out for the new books! And if you ever happen to be near Kutztown, P.A., stop in and see the book house!
