Q & A with ANDAM winner Hakaan
Hakaan , the designer that hit Paris running after winning the prestigious ANDAM award for young designers, is a Turkish-British-Parisian hybrid that is truly making waves in fashion. We are pleased to carry his fall collection in stores, and looking forward to seeing what he has whipped up for Paris fashion week in just a few days. Opening Ceremony: The ANDAM award has a storied history, with past winners including Martin Margiela, Giles Deacon, Viktor & Rolf, and Gareth Pugh. How does it feel to follow in these designers' footsteps?
HY: It feels like magic! We have worked so hard on the collection and we had very little capital and of course we wanted the best! It was like building a house on your own! Then we got the news that we won ANDAM... We were thrilled!
OC: How did you dress when you were a teenager?
HY: Lots of shorts... Lots of leather and American Eagle trainers! Wow...
OC: How are you feeling about the move to Paris?
HY: It feels very exciting and scary at the same time... We will keep doing what we believe in, and I hope that Paris will like it.
OC: What is your favorite French film?
HY: Belle de jour.
OC: Which Parisian womens' style do you admire?
HY: Carine Roitfeld.
OC: What do you love about London, your adopted hometown?
HY: London is so great. It has something in the air that's so inspiring.
OC: What is your relationship with photographer Mert Alas? What is your opinion on current fashion photography?
HY: Mert Alas is a creative director of our brand. He is the heart of the label and of the collection, and also a very good friend of mine. His pictures dazzle me every time - he inspires me like mad!
OC: What is you star sign? Do you believe in astrology?
HY: Sagittarius, though I don't believe in it so much.
OC: Can you describe your perfect day?
HY: Being in bed after a show!
